Otoplasty FAQs

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the structure and appearance of the external ear, or ‘pinna’. While otoplasty can encompass a variety of alterations, it is most commonly called ‘ear pinning surgery’ which addresses prominent or protruding ears.

How long is the procedure?

Generally otoplasty can take around one to one and-a-half hours. If patients are undergoing general anesthesia or taking relaxing medications before an office procedure, they will need to arrange for transportation to and from surgery as well as care overnight the first night after surgery.

What can I expect or recovery after surgery?

Surgery is generally very well tolerated, with soreness and pain resolving after the first couple of days after surgery. Patients are encouraged to avoid strenuous physical activity for a week or two after the procedure. Patients see Dr. McCann one week and one month after the procedure to ensure an optimal healing process and outcome, with additional visits spaced further apart after this.

Am I good candidate for otoplasty surgery?
Where is surgery performed?

Otoplasty can be performed in an office setting or in the operating room, depending on the patient’s specific needs and desires. If done in the office, local anesthesia (numbing medications) and relaxing medications are used; if done in the operating room, surgery is done under general anesthesia.

What is the earliest age otoplasty can be performed?

It is recommended that otoplasty be performed no earlier than 5-6 years of age. If performed too early in life, surgery can alter the growth of the ear which leads to unpredictable cosmetic results.

Is otoplasty covered by insurance?

In most cases otoplasty is considered an elective, cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. However, patients with associated medical conditions such as severe damage trauma or congenital ear deformities can be eligible for insurance coverage.
