Rhinoplasty FAQs

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the structure of the nose. It can be done for cosmetic reasons, or functional purposes to help with nasal breathing.

How long is the procedure?

Surgery typically lasts between 1-2 hours and is dependent on the specific goals of surgery.

Will insurance pay for surgery?

While this is a highly nuanced discussion that is best had in person with a qualified surgeon such as Dr. McCann, generally cosmetic changes to the nose are not covered by insurance. For select patients that meet criteria for functional rhinoplasty, this is typically covered in part by insurance.

Am I good candidate for otoplasty surgery?

Great question! If you are concerned about the appearance of your ears or your child’s ears, the best place to start is with a face-to-face conversation with a qualified surgeon such as Dr. McCann. An individualized care plan will be devised for your specific needs so we can help you feel and look as good as possible.

Will everyone know that I had my nose done?

As with any cosmetic surgery, Dr. McCann’s goal for every patient is to have a natural, non-operated appearance. When done correctly, rhinoplasty surgery promotes a balanced appearance of the entire face rather than bringing attention to the nose by itself. The end result is a nose that is ‘subtly beautiful’ but still looks like you!

Am I good candidate for rhinoplasty surgery?

Good question! This is a complex question that is best answered with a face-to-face conversation with a qualified surgeon such as Dr. McCann. The meticulous pre- operative process includes photography of your nose and altering these pictures to an appearance that you think is ideal. The goals of this conversation and your treatment are driven by you as the patient, so we can help you feel and look as good as possible.

Where is surgery performed?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed in the operating room setting here in Lawrence, KS. Patients will need to arrange for transportation to and from surgery, as well as care overnight the first night after surgery.

What is the difference between cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is solely focused on the outward appearance of the nose. Functional rhinoplasty is a similar procedure but focuses on improving the nasal passages and maximizing nasal breathing. Functional rhinoplasty is often indicated with a history of nasal fracture or other trauma, or severe nasal septal deviation. Patients often combine functional surgery with specific cosmetic changes to be done at the same time.

What can I expect for recovery after surgery?

All patients undergoing rhinoplasty will expect to have swelling in their nose for several weeks after their procedure, however the majority of the swelling will be gone after 1-2 weeks. The total healing process after rhinoplasty (all swelling resolving, scar tissue formation/solidification, etc.) can take up to 6-12 months after surgery however the vast majority of the healing process is complete after the first month following the procedure.

Patients requiring osteotomies (controlled fractures or reductions of the nasal bones) can expect bruising and swelling around their nose and eyes for a week or more after surgery.

Patients can expect soreness of the nose that will resolve over the following several days after the procedure.

Patients see Dr. McCann one week and 4-6 weeks after surgery to ensure your optimal healing process and outcome, and additional visits are spaced further apart over the following months.
